Curriculum Specials

The curriculum at Mary Our Queen is enriched through the inclusion of various special curriculum classes. Students also attend classes for:

  • Physical Education
  • Music
  • Library
  • Spanish
  • Art

Spanish

Our Spanish lessons in person and online involve the use of authentic materials and activities to explore the goal areas of communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, and communities. Students are encouraged to identify meaning through context as we work through scenarios, readings, songs, short videos, as well as materials we create in class. For example, students follow directions in order to complete a task in class, such as interpreting weather information from a forecast in Spanish. In order to complete this task, they have to use their Spanish vocabulary for numbers, weather, days of the week, months of the year, and geography. Additionally, it’s a blessing to explore our Catholic faith through prayer and traditions followed in Spanish speaking countries.

Music

Students at MOQ have the opportunity to learn about the foundations of music theory, singing, and playing an instrument. Students have music class once a week. We strive to incorporate “beatful, tuneful, and artful” activities in each lesson to allow students to explore various ways to experience music.  K-3 students focus on mastering a steady beat, differentiating between sounds, notating simple rhythms, and developing their singing voice. 4-6 students focus on expressing ideas through improvisation, learning performance procedure, and reading music. Jr. High students focus on applying music notation to playing an instrument, exploring musical careers, and learning about music history. In 5th grade, students  have the opportunity to join band and choose a musical instrument through the Music in Catholic Schools program.

The highlight of the MOQ music program is our annual Christmas Cantata and Song Fests.  Students can also be part of the Children’s Choir that sings at Friday’s All- school Masses. This choir practices Wednesdays  after school.

Physical Education

Students in grades Pre-K through 8 attend a weekly physical education (P.E.) class.

This includes structured physical activities in a safe and comfortable learning environment to promote good sportsmanship, social skills, and an active healthy lifestyle. The curriculum is based on the National and State Physical Education Standards.  Physical Education class is based on the student’s total wellness through intellectual, social, emotional, physical and spiritual development. One of the highlights is our annual MOQ Field Day and Color Run.  Students are also taught skills that include CPR and safety. Our PE program is based on Physical Education, Physical Activity, Health and Wellness.

Library

Mary Our Queen School Library is a dynamic learning environment that provides access and opportunity for all PK – 8th grade learners. Our library provides students access to resources and technology, connecting classroom learning to real-world events.

By providing access to an array of well-managed resources, we enable academic knowledge and expand our learning environment that ensures that the unique interests and needs of individual students are met. In this way, we establish a community of lifelong learners.

Our library delivers a well-rounded educational program. This program focuses on accessing and evaluating information, providing digital learning training and experiences, and developing a culture of reading. The program uses a variety of engaging and relevant resources including both digital and print.

Art

MOQ is dedicated to the development of art as an expression of the gifts God has given us.  Each grade level integrates art throughout their curriculum, which allows our students to explore different types of media for visual art expression. We strive to provide art education for each student to obtain a basic working knowledge of art techniques, media vocabulary and history.  Student work can be found displayed throughout the school.

The goals of our art education program are:

  • To use fine works of art as an integral part of the learning process.
  • To have students exposed to the great works of many artists.
  • To teach students how to appreciate the world of art.
